CSUSM to Compete in Five Meets Over Three Days

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's and women's track & field program will compete in five meets in three days as it takes part in the Pacific Coast Invitational, the ULV Leopard Invitational, the Bryan Clay Invitational, the Mt. SAC Relays and the Beach Invitational on Thursday through Saturday.
 
LAST MEET

  • CSUSM last competed in UC San Diego's Triton Invitational on April 4-5 in La Jolla.
  • Will Prouty broke his own school record in the hammer throw with a mark of 55.07 meters - .68 better than his previous mark.
  • Dre Johnson and Jason Wells recorded the second- and third-fastest 200-meter times in program history at 21.42 and 21.71 seconds.
  • Rasha Badrani became the NCAA Division II leader in the 400-meter hurdles as she broke her own school record with an NCAA provisional time of 57.79 seconds – 23rd all-time in Division II history and 1.51 seconds faster than her record time last season. Badrani was the top collegiate athlete in the event and took second out of 25 entrants.
  • Badrani also broke the 12-year-old school record in the 200-meter dash with an NCAA provisional time of 23.85 seconds - .57 seconds faster than the previous record set by Amber Rosario in 2013 and .65 seconds faster than Badrani's previous best time. Badrani finished second out of 95 entrants.
  • Adriana Hewitt ran the fourth-fastest time in program history at 25.14 seconds in the 200-meter dash.

PACIFIC COAST INVITATIONAL

  • The Cougars will begin their busy weekend at Thursday's Pacific Coast Invitational hosted by Long Beach State.
  • This will be CSUSM's first time competing in the meet.
  • The entire meet will take place on Thursday beginning at 8 a.m.
  • A total of 57 teams making up 1,815 entries from NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, the NAIA, and Canada are currently entered.

  • This is the first running of the ULV Leopard Invitational at the University of La Verne.
  • A total of 73 schools from all three NCAA Divisions along with junior colleges have entries.
  • The Cougars have a total of 33 entries.
  • CSUSM will compete on both Thursday and Friday.

BEACH INVITATIONAL

  • This will be CSUSM's fifth consecutive season competing in the Long Beach State's Beach Invitational and eighth time overall.
  • CSUSM has just two entries in Kalathan Laiwa-McKay (shot put) and Autumn Shomaker (long jump).
  • A total of 74 teams from Division I, II and Canada D-1, D-2, and Canada are joined by six clubs to make up 2,335 entries.

THE OLSON FILE

  • Head coach Torrey Olson begins his seventh season at the helm of the men's and women's track & field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
  • In 2019, Olson's men's and women's squads tallied three individual CCAA Championships for outdoor competition while the men's team earned five USTFCCCA All-West Region selections.
  • In 2022, Olson guided both teams to a combined three individual CCAA Championships, 13 All-CCAA selections and five outdoor and three indoor USTFCCCA All-West Region honors.
  • In 2023, the Cougars earned a combined five individual CCAA Championships, 19 All-CCAA selections, six outdoor and three indoor USTFCCCA All-West Region honorees under Olson's leadership.
  • In 2024, CSUSM had a combined five individual CCAA Champions, 16 All-CCAA selections and five outdoor USTFCCCA All-West Region honorees.
  • Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
  • Olson served as the head cross country coach for the previous three years at Academy of Art.
  • In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
  • A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary's College (2012).
