Cougars Fall to Warriors in CCAA Tournament Championship Game

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team (7-8-5) saw its 2025 season come to a close with a 3-0 loss to No. 3 Stanislaus State (16-1-1) in the championship game of the CCAA Tournament on Sunday at Cardinale Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Scoreless in the first 45 minutes, Stanislaus led in shots (7-5) and corner kicks (2-1), but CSUSM had the edge in shots on goal (3-0).
  • Stanislaus broke up the scoreless game in the 58th game. Dribbling deep into the left side of the box, Samuel Villanueva made a sliding pass to Michael Daly, who put the ball into the right side of the goal from just left of the penalty kick marker to put the Warriors up 1-0.
  • On a Stanislaus free kick 10 yards outside the top of the box with Villanueva and Alexis Cervantes standing over the ball, Villanueva made the first touch over to Cervantes, who placed the high shot for Villanueva that went into the center of the goal to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead in the 65th minute.
  • The Warriors put the game out of reach in the 81st minute with their third goal of the game. Daly dribbled to the top left corner of the box and made a pass to his right to Sebastian Carbajal, who put a shot into the top right corner of the goal to make it 3-0.

  • The Cougars had the edge in corner kicks at 7-6, but the Warriors led the game in shots (23-13) and shots on goal (8-4).
  • Both sides equally had possession for 50% of the match while the CSUSM had the ball in Toro territory for 69% of the time.
  • Efren Nunez Dominguez led all Cougars with four shots while Jesua Espinoza Castillo had three.
  • CSUSM is now 5-4-2 in the all-time series against Stanislaus.
