Cougars to Compete at Franson Last Chance

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's and women's track & field teams will have a final opportunity to qualify student-athletes for the 2025 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships when it heads to Azusa Pacific for the Franson Last Chance on Friday and Saturday at Cougar Athletic Stadium.
 
LAST MEET

  • At the CCAA Championships, the men's team earned a third-place finish while the women's team came in sixth.
  • The men's team saw eight Cougars earn All-CCAA honors in nine events while Kalathan Laiwa-McKay won the shot put championship for the third consecutive season with a school record 17.82 meters.
  • On the women's side, six Cougars earned All-CCAA honors. Rasha Badrani won the 400-meter hurdles championship for a second consecutive year while also winning the 400-meter dash championship.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • The men's and women's teams have combined for 10 NCAA Division II provisional marks this season.
  • On the women's side, Rasha Badrani is the Cougars' front runner as she currently ranks first nationally in the 400-meter hurdles (57.79) and sixth in the 400-meter dash (52.72).
  • Kalathan Laiwa-McKay is the highest ranked Cougar on the men's team as he's 15th in the shot put (17.82m).

 
FRANSON LAST CHANCE

  • The Franson Last Chance will be the Cougars' final opportunity to improve their qualifying marks for the chance to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colorado on May 22-24.
  • This will be the Cougars' fifth time competing in the Fanson Last Chance, previously doing so in 2013, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
  • CSUSM has 23 entries spread across 13 events.

 
THE OLSON FILE

  • Head coach Torrey Olson begins his seventh season at the helm of the men's and women's track & field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
  • In 2019, Olson's men's and women's squads tallied three individual CCAA Championships for outdoor competition while the men's team earned five USTFCCCA All-West Region selections.
  • In 2022, Olson guided both teams to a combined three individual CCAA Championships, 13 All-CCAA selections and five outdoor and three indoor USTFCCCA All-West Region honors.
  • In 2023, the Cougars earned a combined five individual CCAA Championships, 19 All-CCAA selections, six outdoor and three indoor USTFCCCA All-West Region honorees under Olson's leadership.
  • In 2024, CSUSM had a combined five individual CCAA Champions, 16 All-CCAA selections and five outdoor USTFCCCA All-West Region honorees.
  • Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
  • Olson served as the head cross country coach for the previous three years at Academy of Art.
  • In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
  • A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary's College (2012).
