Sloss, Waymire Named to 2024 Tucci/NFCA Player & Pitcher of the Year Watchlist
SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Jayline Sloss and Madison Waymire represented Cal State San Marcos on the 2024 Tucci/NFCA Player and Pitcher of the Year Watchlist as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) on Thursday.
The Player of the Year award was created in 2015 to honor the outstanding athletic achievements among softball student-athletes throughout NCAA Division II. In 2019, the Association expanded the award to include a Player and Pitcher of the Year. The list is compiled and the award is voted on by the elected members of the NFCA Division II All-American Committee with one head coach representing each of the eight NCAA regions. To be eligible, a student-athletes' head coach must be a member.
The Top 25 finalists for the 2022 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Year awards will be announced on May 5. A student-athlete does not have to be on the Top 50 list to be considered for the Top 25. The winner of each award will be announced on June 2, following the conclusion of the 2022 season.
Sloss, a CCAA Pitcher of the Week honoree earlier this season, is leading the CCAA in ERA (0.88) as well as walks and hits per innings pitched, which is known as WHIP (0.96). She ranks second in the conference with 10 victories and two shutouts. The Bakersfield native has accumulated a 10-3 record in 95.0 innings, limiting opponents to a .196 batting average.
Following a stellar performance in the circle, Sloss was named to the Tournament of Champions All-Tournament team last weekend.
Waymire is leading CSUSM with a .396 batting average with 38 hits, seven doubles, one triple and four home runs. Her 0.90 runs per game average ranks second in the CCAA. Waymire is averaging 0.59 walks per game, ranking third in the CCAA while boasting the fourth-best on-base percentage in the conference at .491. She has tallied a team-best nine multi-hit games including a 4-for-4 performance against San Francisco State on March 8.
Joining Sloss and Waymire on the list from the CCAA are Cal State San Bernardino's Tereise Tosi, Cal State Monterey Bay's Mackenzie Willis and Sonoma State's Anna Zoia Buescher.
The No. 19 Cougars will return to the field this afternoon at Cal State Dominguez Hills for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
