Strong Second Half Gives CSUSM 66-54 Win at Stanislaus

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team (3-14, 3-8 CCAA) earned its second consecutive win with a 66-54 over Stanislaus State (8-10, 5-7 CCAA) on Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cougars began the game with back-to-back layups by Dexter Stratton to make it 4-0.
  • The Warriors tied it at 6-6 on a Daniel Ameyaw jumper with 13:54 left in the half.
  • An 8-2 run that was capped with a Will Harris second-chance 3-pointer put CSUSM ahead 14-8 with 8:22 remaining in the period.
  • The Cougars took their largest lead of first half after Harris made a 3-pointer and the subsequent free throw to make it 20-13 with 4:11 to go.
  • Stan State went on 7-0 run and tied the game at 20-all on a Cameron Walker 3-pointer with 1:36 remaining in the half.
  • A fast-break 3-pointer by Jonathan Tchengang with 16 seconds to go gave the Warriors a 25-22 lead at halftime.
  • CSUSM went 26.7% (8-of-30) from the field in the first 20 minutes while Stanislaus wasn't much better at 28% (7-of-25).
  • Out of the break, the Warriors took their largest lead of the game at 30-24 on a Jeremiah Jones second-chance 3-pointer with 17:47 to play.
  • A 10-2 run by the Cougars gave them a 34-32 lead after a dunk by Uriah Foster with 12:43 remaining.
  • Stanislaus took its last lead of the game at 40-39 on a Jones jumper with 9:32 to go.
  • Up 44-42, CSUSM scored 10 unanswered points and went up 56-44 after a Keavie Love free throw with 2:50 remaining.
  • Another 3-pointer by Harris gave CSUSM its largest lead of the day at 60-46 with 2:06 to play.
  • CSUSM shot a hot 70% (14-of-20) from the field in the second half while holding Stanislaus to 41.4% (12-of-29). The Cougars were also 4-of-5 (80%) from downtown while the Warriors went 1-of-13 (7.7%).
  • The Cougars outscored the Warriors 44-29 in the final 20 minutes.

 
FAST BREAKS

  • CSUSM ended the game shooting 44% (22-of-50) from the field while Stanislaus finished at 35.2% (19-of-54).
  • The Cougars had the edge in rebounds (42-25) and assists (16-10).
  • CSUSM scored 15 second-chance points as it came down with 14 offensive boards.
  • CSUSM's 16 assists were a season high.
  • Stratton's 11 boards were the most by a Cougar this season as he earned his first double-double of the season.
  • Harris' four 3-pointers were a season best for any Cougar.
  • The Cougars held the lead for 26:32 while the Warriors had it for 8:49.
  • Stan State's Jeremiah Jones led the game with 24 points.
  • This was CSUSM's seventh consecutive win against Stanislaus since beginning the steak on Jan. 30, 2020.
  • The Cougars are now 12-3 in the all-time series against the Warriors and are 6-2 when playing in Turlock.
