CSUSM Wraps Regular Season at Hanny Invitational

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos men's golf team will conclude its 2024-25 regular season at the Hanny Invitational this week in Turlock. 


LAST TIME OUT

  • CSUSM finished 12th out of 17 teams at the RJGA Palm Valley Classic last week in Goodyear, Arizona. The Cougars finished with a 4-over 868 (296-280-292). 
  • Patrick Jaksch was CSUSM's top golfer for the second consecutive tournament, tying for fourth place at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout. 
  • CSUSM is ranked seventh in the latest NCAA Division II Regional Rankings with Cal State East Bay in the top spot, followed by No. 2 Cal State Monterey Bay, No. 3 Simon Fraser, No. 4 Chico State, No. 5 Sonoma State and No. 6 Stanislaus State. Behind the Cougars are No. 8 Cal State San Bernardino, No. 9 Hawaii HIlo, No. 10 Western Washington and No. 11 Northwest Nazarene.

    HANNY STANISLAUS INVITATIONAL

    • CSUSM will make its eighth appearance in the Hanny Invitational this season. 
    • Prior to the Hanny Invitational, Stan State hosted the Buzzini Invitational, which the Cougars competed in four times (2000, 2001, 2002, 2006).
    • Last season, the Cougars placed sixth out of 15 teams. 
    • The Cougars had their most successful finish in 2015 with a second-place finish out of 18 teams. 
    • Cal State Monterey Bay defeated two-time defending champion Western Washington with an 18-under 846 (277-285-284). 
    • Chico State's Tyler Ashman and Simon Bjorken of Cal State Monterey Bay each carded an 11-under 205, yet Ashman won the playoff to take home the hardware.
    • CSUSM's top golfer in 2024 at the Hanny Invite was Jason McElroy who tied for third with a 9-under 207 (68-70-69).

    COUGAR OUTLOOK

    • With nine returners from the 2023-24 team, this year's squad has only one new face with the addition of Owen Otto
    • The 2023-24 team finished in the top 5 in seven of its 11 tournaments last year. 
    • The Cougars saw last season come to an end with a 16th-place finish in the NCAA West/South Central Regional Championship. 


    THE HUTTON FILE

    • Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
    • Hutton has been named CCAA Coach of the Year a total of seven times, six times on the women's side and one time on the men's side. 
    • The CSUSM men's golfer Matt Pennington was the program's first-ever CCAA Champion and NCAA West/South Central Regional Champion in 2022. 
    • The CSUSM women's team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob.
    • In 2023, the CSUSM men's team captured its first-ever CCAA Championship Tournament Title, defeating runner-up Cal State Monterey by one stroke on April 19 at the Victory Club in Riverside. 
    • Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024. 
    • In CSUSM's first year of being a full-fledged NCAA Division II member in 2017-18, the Cougar men's and women's golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
