No. 17 CSUSM Seeks Fifth Consecutive CCAA Title

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The No. 17 Cal State San Marcos women's golf team will look to win a fifth consecutive CCAA Championship team title this week in Santa Rosa, California. The tournament will take place at Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club on April 22-24 with one round being played each day. 


LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars placed eighth at the West Texas A&M Desert Invitational on April 1-2 in Tucson, Arizona. 
  • Madison Murr collected runner-up honors with an even-par 144 (73-71), one stroke behind Texas A&M International's Yuliana Yapur (143, -1)
  • Murr collected her seventh career CCAA Golf of the Week honor. (see below). 

CCAA GOLFER OF THE WEEK

  • Madison Murr earned her seventh career CCAA Golfer of the Week honor after closing out the 36-hole tournament at even-par 144. She was just one stroke behind the individual medalist and was the only CCAA golfer to place top-10 at the tournament.
  • In the first round, Murr finished 1-over 73 and had four birdies. In the second round, she finished 1-under 71 with an additional four birdies. Overall, the junior from Los Alamitos, California had eight birdies, eight bogeys, and 16 pars.
  • Murr picked up her seventh top-10 finish out of eight tournaments played in 2023-24, earning individual medalist honors at four of them. This CCAA Golfer of the Week award marks the fourth for Murr this season.


NO. 4 REGIONAL RANKING

  • In the second regional rankings with teams ranked, the Cougars moved to No. 4 in the West Region behind No. 1 Dallas Baptist, No. 2 West Texas A&M and No. 3 St. Mary's (Texas). 
  • Four other CCAA schools are featured in the top 14 – No. 6 Cal State LA,  No. 7 Cal State Monterey Bay, No. 9 Cal State East Bay and No. 12 Sonoma State.
  • The 2024 NCAA West Regional will be held at Brookside Golf and Country Club in Stockton May 6-8. 
  • According to NCAA Scoreboard powered by Clippd, Murr is ranked No. 4 in the nation, behind No. 1 Julia Garcia, No. 2 Mary Kelly Mulcahy of Findley and No. 3 Stella Jelinek of Flagler.

CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

  • CSUSM has been crowned the CCAA Tournament Champion each of the four times the tournament has been played, taking home the title in 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023. 
  • The 2020 and 2021 championships were canceled due to the COVID pandemic. 
  • The Cougars won last year's CCAA Tournament by seven strokes with a 37-over 901 at the Victoria Club in Riverside, California on April 17-19. 
  • For the third time in four CCAA Tournaments, a CSUSM golfer was the individual medalist as Caroline Wales won with a 2-over 218 (74-72-72). 
  • In 2022, CSUSM won the tournament by 18 strokes with a 45-over 909 at the Yocha Dehe Golf Course in Brooks, California, on April 11-13. 
  • Makenna Cabardo was the 2022 CCAA Championship Runner-Up after carding a 4-under 68 in the final round, concluding the three rounds with a 6-over 222 (78-76-68). 
  • After tying for third with a 12-over 228 (78-78-72), Madison Murr joined Cabardo on the 2022 CCAA All-Tournament Team. 
  • CSULA's Morgan Sjoersdma was crowned the 2022 CCAA individual medalist after carding a 5-over 221. 
  • The 18-hole par 72 course at the Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club is 6,712 yards from the championship tees. The beautiful parkland golf course is walkable and is designed to be enjoyed by players of all levels of skill, age and experience.
  • Originally founded in 1916, the Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club was relocated to its present-day location in 1959 by designer Jack Fleming, a protege of legendary designer Alister MacKenzie.
  • Sonoma State will serve as host to this year's championships. 

   COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • This year's squad will feature three new Cougars in the lineup — freshmen Chloe Rahn and Maddie Reed in addition to midseason transfer Hannah Anderson 
  • The Cougars won their fourth consecutive CCAA Championship title in 2023, defeating second-place Cal State Monterey Bay by six strokes. 
  • After a third-place finish in the NCAA West Regional, CSUSM made its second appearance in the NCAA National Championships, finishing ninth in stroke play. 

THE HUTTON FILE

  • Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
  • In his 13 years as the Cougar men's coach and nine years as the Cougar women's coach, Hutton has led CSUSM to 59 tournament victories (35 women/24 men). 
  • The CSUSM women's team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob.
  • The CSUSM men's golfer Matt Pennington was the program's first-ever CCAA Champion and NCAA West/South Central Regional Champion in 2022. 
  • In 2023, the CSUSM men's team captured its first-ever CCAA Championship Tournament Title, defeating runner-up Cal State Monterey by one stroke on April 19 at the Victory Club in Riverside. 
  • Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019, 2022 and 2023. 
  • In CSUSM's first year of being a full-fledged NCAA Division II member in 2017-18, the Cougar men's and women's golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
