CSUSM Drops Doubleheader to Cal Poly Pomona
POMONA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (20-15, 19-11 CCAA) fell in both games of its doubleheader at Cal Poly Pomona (21-15, 17-10 CCAA) by scores of 11-1 and 6-5 on Saturday at Scolinos Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- CPP started the scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning as it scored six runs on a pair of two-run singles by Johnny Pappas and Marco Malerba, a sacrifice fly by Anthony Gibbons and an RBI single by Tyler Chaffee.
- A solo shot by Cota and a sac fly by Gibbons gave the Broncos an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh.
- A bases-loaded walk by Cota, a sac fly by Pappas and an RBI single by Sanders put CPP ahead 11-0 in the bottom of the seventh.
- CSUSM broke up the shutout in the top of the ninth as Ruben Cedillo earned an RBI on a fielder's choice to third and made it an 11-1 game.

- CPP starter Rhys Stevens (2-3) earned the win as he struck out three while allowing just two hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in 7.0 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Like the first game of the day, the scoring didn't start until the fifth inning, but this time, it was the Cougars who got it started as they took a 5-0 lead on a two-run single by Reece, a pair of RBI singles by Rivera and Mahaffy and a Bronco error that scored Rivera.
- In the bottom of the inning, CPP cut the deficit to 5-2 with a two-run double to left by Marco Malerba.
- Down to their final out, the Broncos rallied with a two-run single up the middle by Darius Price and an RBI single through the right side by Nick Lugo to tie the game and send it to an extra eighth inning.
- After a scoreless top of the eighth by the Cougars, the Broncos won the game in the bottom of the eighth with a walk-off sac fly to center by Sanders, allowing Brent Cota to score the game-winning run from third.
