Six-Run Inning Propels CSUSM to 9-2 Victory at No. 24 CSUMB

SEASIDE, Calif. – A six-run inning propelled the Cal State San Marcos baseball team (20-16, 15-12 CCAA) to a 9-2 win in the series opener at No. 24 Cal State Monterey Bay (25-13, 18-11 CCAA) on Thursday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After singles by Phoenix Sommay and Marco Pirruccello and a sacrifice bunt by Garrett Teunissen, an RBI groundout to second by Zavien Watson scored Sommay and gave CSUSM a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth.
  • The Otters took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer to left center from KW Quilici.
  • The Cougars broke out with a six-run inning in the top of the seventh with an RBI single by Cameron Mahaffy, a three-run homer to right center by Evan Scalley and a two-run homer by Fisher Pyatt to go up 7-2.
  • CSUSM struck for two more runs in the top of the eighth with a pair of RBI singles from Mahaffy and Ethan Rivera to take a 9-2 lead.

  • Cougar starter Spencer Anderson (5-1) earned the win after striking out five while allowing two unearned runs on seven hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in a career-high 7.1 innings.
  • Otter starter Nate Rohlicek (2-2) took the loss after allowing six earned runs on five hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in 6.1 innings.
  • The Cougars have now won seven of their last eight games since April 5.
