CSUSM's Strong Start Not Enough Against No. 25 CPP

SAN MARCOS, Calif.  – A strong first quarter wasn't enough as the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (0-7, 0-2 CCAA) fell 77-64 to No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona (6-1, 2-0 CCAA) on Thursday night in The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cougars came out on fire in the first quarter, jumping out to a 20-7 lead after going 8-of-15 (53.3%) from the field and 4-of-7 (57.1%) from the 3-point line.
  • CSUSM took its largest lead of the game on a Morse 3-pointer to make it 32-11 at the 6:41 mark of the second quarter.
  • The Broncos put together a 6-0 run to close out the second quarter after starting a full-court press.
  • The Cougars took a 35-24 lead into the halftime break after shooting 47.8% (11-of-23) from the field and 58.3% (7-of-12) from beyond the arc.
  • Hetrick led all scorers with 11 points while Okonkwo contributed six rebounds in the first half.
  • A jumper that bounced around the rim made it a double-digit game at 39-29 at the 6:24 mark of the third quarter.
  • The Broncos put together an 13-2 run to take their first lead since the opening seconds of the game at 42-41 with 3:03 remaining in the third quarter.
  • A last-second 3-pointer by CPP's Breanne Ha gave the Broncos a 47-44 lead at the end of the third quarter.
  • The Broncos outscored CSUSM 25-15 in the fourth quarter to clinch the victory.

 
FAST BREAKS

  • The Broncos shot 43.5% (27-of-62) to CSUSM's 41.2% (21-of-51) in the game.
  • CSUSM had a slight edge in second-chance points, 18-17.
  • The Cougars led the game for 25:45 while CPP was on top the entire fourth quarter to finish at 12:19.
  • CSUSM capitalized on CPP's 12 turnovers with 14 points while the Broncos only tallied 15 points off the Cougars' 20 turnovers.
  • The Cougars remain on top of the all-time series against Pomona at 9-7 and are now 5-3 when playing in The Sports Center.
