No. 21/NR Cougars Hosts CPP, CSUSB This Week

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The No. 21/NR Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (13-3, 10-2 CCAA) will begin the second half of its CCAA schedule this week, hosting Cal Poly Pomona (12-4, 9-3) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before taking on Cal State San Bernardino (10-8, 5-7 CCAA) on Saturday at 1 p.m. 


LAST TIME OUT

  • CSUSM took down Cal State East Bay last Thursday by a score of 72-62 before falling to No. 10/10 Cal State Dominguez Hills 74-73 on Saturday afternoon. 
  • Jordan Vasquez tallied a CSUSM career-best 27 points against CSUDH, two points shy of her collegiate career high. 


COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM dropped to No. 21 in the latest WBCA Top 25 Poll. 
  • The Cougars are now ranked No. 5 in the D2SIDA West Regional Poll, and CSUDH took over the top spot. 
  • CSUSM remains in the No. 2 spot in the CCAA standings with a 10-2 record behind CSUDH, who remains undefeated in conference at 12-0. The Cougars have a one-game lead over third-place Cal Poly Pomona (9-3). 
  • CSUSM is the top ball-handling team in the CCAA, ranking 25th in turnovers per game (13.5) and 44th in assist/turnover ratio (1.01) in the nation. 
  • The Cougars remain at No. 1 in the CCAA in free throw percentage at 77.6% (208-of-268) and rank 12th in the nation. 
  • CSUSM is committing the second-fewest fouls in the CCAA at 15.8 per game. 
  • Four Cougars are in the top 10 in the CCAA in assist/turnover ratio with Deannah Buckner and Kate Carlson tied at No. 3 (2.00), followed by Charity Gallegos at No. 8 (1.77) and Kayden Korst taking the No. 9 spot (1.56). 
  • Kelsey Forrester is the CCAA 3-point field-goal percentage leader at 41.7. 
  • Dynnah Buckner ranks second in the CCAA with 62 made free throws this season. 
  • Averaging 3.00 3-pointers per game, Forrester ranks second in the CCAA behind CSUDH's Nicole Flennaugh and seventh in Division II. 
  • Forrester has 201 career 3-pointers and is moving in on the CCAA record of 226 held by Chico State's Maddy Wong (2016-20).

THURSDAY AGAINST CPP

  • The Cougars and Broncos will be squaring off for the second time this season on Thursday. 
  • In their last meeting on Jan. 7, the Broncos handed the Cougars their first CCAA loss of the season with a 68-65 decision in Pomona. 
  • CSUSM is 6-6 in the all-time series against CPP and is 3-2 when playing at home.
  • The Broncos went 1-1 last weekend at home, defeating Cal Poly Humboldt 75-58 on Thursday before falling 68-65 to Sonoma State on Saturday. 
  • Ally Bates leads CPP with 14.8 points per game.
  • The Broncos have the second-highest 3-point field-goal percentage in the CCAA at 34.2. 
  • CPP is ranked third in the CCAA standings behind second-place CSUSM.

SATURDAY MATINEE VS. CSUSB

  • Prior to Saturday's game, the Coyotes will face Cal State LA on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. 
  • This will be the second meeting this season between the Cougars and the Coyotes. 
  • The Cougars brought home a 63-55 victory over CSUSB on Jan. 5 in San Bernardino after outscoring the Coyotes 42-28 in the second half.

THE JIMENEZ FILE

  • Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her eighth season in charge of the Cougar women's basketball team, a program that is only in its twelfth season of existence.
  • In 2021-22, Jimenez earned her third career and second consecutive CCAA Coach of the Year honor. She previously earned the award as the head coach at Cal State Monterey Bay during the 2010-11 season. 
  • With Jimenez at the helm, the Cougars clinched their second consecutive CCAA Regular-Season Championship
  • After CSUSM's 2019-20 inaugural NCAA Division II West Regional appearance was cut short due to COVID-19, the Cougars were finally able to make their debut in the national tournament in 2021-22 as the No. 4 seed. 
  • The Cougars have advanced to the CCAA Tournament three times, making it to the semifinals in 2018-19 followed by back-to-back finals appearance in 2019-20 and 2021-22.
  • Jimenez has compiled a 231-141 (.621) in her 14 seasons coaching in the CCAA, spending two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.
  • In her seven seasons at CSUSM, Jimenez has tallied a record of 106-70 (.602).
